ABTEM (The Association of British Transport and Engineering Museums) is a subject specialist network for all things engineering and transport collections based. It is jam packed full of experts with skills and experiences covering a wider range of transport, engineering and industrial objects, large and small, who are keen to share and support the wider museum world. From steam engines, tanks, cars and bicycles to rail tracks, heavy machinery, and tiny factory tokens there is an experienced member of ABTEM for it – and if there isn’t, we will know where to find one!
In recent years we worked to produce the Guidelines for the Care of Larger and Working Historic Objects, have run seminars and helped with training days for non-specialists. However, the world has changed and so have the needs of those working in museums.
ABTEM is now keen to discover what the sector needs and the challenges Industrial maritime and Transport museums and volunteer groups are facing so that we can adapt and develop our support and plan ABTEM’s future activity.
We have created a simple online consultation and we’d love feedback from you – please feel free to circulate to colleagues who might be interested. If you can’t access the online form there is a PDF version, simply send an email to email@example.com to request this.

We look forward to hearing from you and will make the results available in the spring.
